Set in an excited child’s bedroom on Christmas Eve, it combines the excitement of anticipating Santa (or St Nicholas) with the traditional nativity story told by Grandpa.
All of the acting and narration is done in small rhyming speaking parts, interjected by the tale, as read by Grandpa as a ‘bedtime story’.
This makes it easy to omit characters for smaller cast sizes, without affecting the flow of the story. (Alternative lines are generally offered for the narrator so the length of the script doesn’t change)
As traditions regarding Santa, or Saint Nicholas vary from country to country, I have included variations on the script to cover each of the following:-
- Santa can be referred to as Saint Nicholas
- A sleigh can be mentioned or omitted without affecting the script
- Rudolf (the Red-nosed reindeer) can be mentioned or omitted without affecting the script
The mention of presents delivered on Christmas Eve and left under the tree by Santa (or Saint Nicholas) is consistent throughout.

I have used my own easily remembered words to the following popular tunes…
- Oranges and lemons (ie travelling song called “Bethlehem, Bethlehem, So Far Away’)
- O Christmas Tree (ie, visitors to the stable song called “In Bethlehem a Babe was Born”)
- The traditional hymn, Children of Jerusalem (ie, Angels’ song called “Angel’s Hallelujah”)
- We wish you a Merry Christmas (ie, Concluding song called “Happy Birthday to Jesus”
Finally, my simple but catchy song, the brand new “Ho Ho Ho” (Santa’s song) is included together with variations for each of the alternatives previously mentioned. As always the rhymes make the words easy and natural to predict, and consequently a simple song to remember.
But we don’t have the music for all of those!

How long does the nativity play last?
The expected performance time is approximately 25 minutes.
Can we reprint the script to give out for the children to learn their parts?
